How to Use Your Niche Outdoors Water Bladder

Our water bladders were designed to make life outdoors that little bit easier — whether you’re camping off-grid, setting up a 4WD touring rig, or heading out on the water. Like most good outdoor gear, a bit of setup and care goes a long way. Check out the range here

Below is how we use ours, step by step.

1. Setting Up Your Bladder

Before you do anything else, it’s worth taking a few minutes to install your fittings properly.

Your bladder comes with screw-in fittings, and we strongly recommend using thread tape on all threaded connections. This helps ensure a good seal and avoids annoying leaks later on.

You’ve got a couple of setup options:

  • With the elbow fitting – great if you want your outlet to run flush or turn neatly out of the bladder.

  • Without the elbow – if you prefer the fitting to run straight out.

There’s no right or wrong here — it really comes down to how and where you plan to mount or use the bladder.

2. Cleaning Before First Use (and Ongoing Care)

Even though your bladder is brand new, it’s always a good idea to give it a clean before first use.

We recommend:

  1. Fill with a solution of warm water and vinegar. Let it sit for 20min and then give it a good slosh around and rinse out with water.
  2. Fill with a solution of warm water and bicarb soda. Let it sit for 20min and then give it a good slosh around and rinse out with water.
  3. Don't combine both vinegar and bicarb soda as they will cancel each other out and the cleaning won't be as effective.

Once done, empty it completely, flush with clean water, and allow it to fully air dry.
If it still smells or you want extra peace of mind, repeat the process. Store the bladder with the fittings removed.

After prolonged use, we suggest coming back to this step and giving your bladder a proper clean again. There are also dissolvable drinking water tank treatment tablets and solutions available on the market that work well to eliminate bacteria.

3. Installing the Bladder in Its Location & Filling Up

This is an important one — choose your location before filling.

Once full, water bladders get heavy very quickly, so it’s best to install it exactly where you want it first. This might be in your vehicle, trailer, boat, or camp setup.

You have two options when it comes to filling:

  • Fill from the top fitting

  • Fill through the outlet using the quick connector and valve (this is our recommended method)

Filling through the outlet helps avoid spills and makes things much more controlled.

If you’re filling via the outlet:

  • Make sure the bladder starts completely flat and free of air

  • As it fills, keep an eye on trapped air

  • Towards the end, you may need to crack the top cap slightly to let the remaining air escape

This helps you get maximum capacity and keeps the bladder sitting neatly in place.

Note - if you are filling from a questionable water source, we recommend using an inline filter upstream of the bladder fill point to avoid filling with poor quality water. Check our inline water filter here

4. Using the Bladder

Once installed and filled, there are a few ways you can use your water bladder depending on your setup.

  • Inline pump – ideal for transferring water, pressurised applications, or feeding taps and showers.

  • Gravity-fed setup – if your outlet is lower than the bladder, you can simply connect a hose and let gravity do the work

This flexibility is what makes the bladders so handy — they can adapt to everything from simple camp use to more built-out touring systems.

5. Packing Away & Storage

When you’re done with your trip, a little care here will keep your bladder in great shape for years.

  • Empty all remaining water

  • Allow the bladder to fully air dry (this is important)

  • Once dry, fold it away and store it in your supplied Niche Outdoors nylon carry bag

For longer-term storage, we recommend removing all fittings and storing them separately. This helps preserve the seals and threads over time.
