What is a fuel bladder, and when do you need one?
A fuel bladder is a flexible, collapsible tank you fill only when you need the extra range, then roll flat and stow away for the rest of the trip.
How a fuel bladder works
A fuel bladder is a sealed pouch made from a laminated fuel-resistant material, with an intake and outlet fitted to one end. Empty, it folds flat into a bag you can stow under a seat, in a hatch or behind a tray toolbox. Filled, it takes the shape of the space it's sitting in.
You fill it before a leg where you know you'll be short on range: a Cape York crossing, an offshore run past the last servo, a Gibb River Road stretch with 400km between bowsers. Once you're back near fuel, you transfer what's left, empty it, and it packs away again.

Two 20L jerry cans give you 40L and about 40kg of dead weight sitting rigid in your tray or hatch, whether you need it that trip or not. A 20L bladder gives you the same 40L across two units for less bulk, and a 240L bladder gives you six times that capacity in one flexible unit that lies flat against the floor of a hatch, tray or footwell instead of standing up as a hazard.
Jerry cans win on one thing: you can decant straight from the spout with no pump. Everything else, weight distribution, packed size when empty, and the number of separate containers you're securing, favours a bladder once you're carrying more than a can or two.
Fishos and boaties needing range for an offshore run are the biggest group. Materials, fittings, and what they're actually rated for
Before you decide on a size, it's worth understanding exactly what a Niche Outdoors fuel bladder is built from and what it's rated for, because the diesel-versus-petrol question comes up in almost every enquiry.
How they're built
Every Niche Outdoors fuel bladder is made from a high-strength TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) laminate, chosen for its resistance to hydrocarbons, abrasion and UV. The 40L and up in the current range are fitted with fuel-grade aluminium alloy and 316 stainless steel fittings, with tie-down D-rings built into the V2 bladders (80L and up) for securing on a deck or tray. Every bladder is drop-tested, pressure-tested, stack-tested, UV-tested, and weld-and-material tensile tested before it goes on sale.
Read this before you buy if you're planning to carry petrol. Niche Outdoors fuel bladders are ADG code compliant for diesel fuel transport and storage. The TPU material and fittings are chemically compatible with petrol, but the bladders do not meet Australian Standards for petrol fuel transport or storage. Why the distinction matters
Diesel and petrol behave differently in storage. Diesel is far less volatile, which is why the ADG (Australian Dangerous Goods) code covers flexible bladder transport for diesel specifically. Petrol's higher volatility and lower flash point are why a separate Australian Standard applies to petrol containers, and why material compatibility with petrol on its own isn't the same thing as being rated to store or transport it. If diesel is your fuel, an ADG-compliant bladder is a straightforward fit. If it's petrol, get the confirmation in writing before you load up for a remote trip.

Choosing the right size
Size the bladder to the leg you're worried about, not your whole trip. Most buyers only need extra range for one or two specific stretches.

Working out the litres you actually need
Start with the one leg that worries you, not your total trip distance. Take your vehicle or boat's fuel burn rate, multiply by the distance of that specific leg, and subtract your existing tank capacity. That's your target bladder size, rounded up to the next size in the range.
Example: a boat burning 25L/hour on a 6-hour offshore run needs 150L for that leg. If the main tank holds 100L, you need at least 50L of bladder capacity, so an 80L or 110L bladder covers it with a buffer.
If your dimensions don't match anything in the standard range, or you're working with an odd-shaped hatch, kill tank bay or under-deck void, that's exactly what the custom program is for.

When people actually pull the trigger
Three moments push most buyers to order: planning a specific trip where they've mapped the fuel logistics and come up short (a Cape York run, an offshore fishing trip, the Canning Stock Route); seeing another boatie or tourer's setup and asking where they got it; or a near miss, running low on fuel in a remote area with no backup plan. Fittings, pumps and transferring fuel
The one thing buyers of large bladders consistently forget: you need a way to get the fuel out. Plan the pump at the same time as the bladder.

Where the pricing sits
The established Australian-made brands in this category sit at a premium price point. Niche Outdoors is positioned below that tier while keeping the fittings, D-rings and testing regime that separate a serious fuel bladder from a budget import. Customers buying a large bladder, 150L and up especially, often don't realise at purchase that they'll need a separate fuel transfer pump to get the fuel out and into a tank. Gravity alone won't get diesel or petrol out of a bladder sitting flat in a hatch or footwell at any usable rate. Protecting the bladder in transit
A Fuel Bladder Protective Cover, available in 60L, 80L, 150L and 240L sizes, is heavy-duty PVC with slots cut for the tie-down points and outlet port. A Protective Bladder Bag adds handles for repositioning a bladder short distances (not rated for lifting a full large bladder) and keeps it away from sharp edges in a tray, hatch or hold. Both are worth adding for anything travelling on unsealed roads or exposed decking.
Bladders ship with ready-to-use fittings, but large sizes need a separate transfer pump to get fuel out at a usable rate. A Seaflo lithium pump plus a free matched adapter is the straightforward fix; add a protective cover for anything travelling rough.
Safe storage, securing and the regulations that apply
A full 200L fuel bladder is 200kg of flammable liquid sitting in the back of your vehicle or boat. Treat the placement and securing with the same seriousness you'd give a rigid tank.
Securing the bladder
Position the bladder flat, away from sharp edges, exhaust heat, batteries and any exposed electrical connections. V2 bladders (80L and up) have built-in tie-down D-rings, use them, don't rely on friction to keep a full bladder in place on a moving vehicle or a boat underway. Check your vehicle's payload rating against the bladder's full weight (roughly 1kg per litre for diesel, similar for petrol) plus everything else you're carrying.
Heat, ventilation and sun exposure
Keep the bladder out of direct, prolonged sun where practical, and don't store it sealed in a hot, unventilated space for extended periods. Fuel vapour needs somewhere to go if there's ever a slow leak, don't store a filled bladder in a sealed cabin space with no airflow.
The ADG (Australian Dangerous Goods) code governs diesel transport in a flexible bladder. Depending on the volume you're carrying and whether you're on public roads, additional dangerous goods placarding or licensing rules can apply at higher volumes, check the current thresholds for your state and vehicle class. Boat operators carrying fuel bladders should also check their state marine safety authority's requirements for fuel storage on board. Filling and running a fuel bladder
Check fittings and your pump setup before you leave, fill away from ignition sources, secure the bladder with the tie-down D-rings, transfer using a matched pump, then empty and store flat when done.
Caring for your bladder between trips
A fuel bladder that's cleaned, dried and stored correctly will outlast several trips. Skip this and you shorten its life fast.
After every trip
Empty the bladder fully and roll it flat to push out residual vapour before folding it away. Avoid folding sharply at the same crease every time, rotate the fold to spread wear across the material.
Inspect before the next trip
Check the fittings, threads and welded seams for wear or damage before every trip, particularly after a period on rough roads or in a saltwater environment. If you spot a puncture or damaged fitting, stop using that bladder and contact Niche Outdoors for advice before attempting a repair or your next fill.
Long-term storage
Store the empty bladder in its carry bag or a Protective Bladder Bag, in a cool, dry, ventilated space out of direct sunlight. Keep it away from sources of heat and any sharp-edged gear it might be stored alongside.
